I sculpt scale model dinosaur skulls (and more) on a popular 3D printing service. I put a lot of research and effort into getting these as accurate as I can. These are my personal copies, painted in acrylic with D.I.Y stands.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Nice models, by sculpting on a 3d-printing service do you mean you create the digital models for printing?

Best regards,

J

Thanks guys, glad you like them.

Yes I sculpt the models in Blender3D. At the time I started doing this ( 4 or 5 years ago) there weren't that many model dinosaur skulls available, then I realised I could have a go myself.

Here's some photos from the Tyrannosaurus series I made a few years ago.

Thanks, anyone can make the papercraft Dimorphodon, I've made a PDF available as a FREE DOWNLOAD from my Deviantart gallery

Papercraft Dimorphodon - download here

You'll only need to print the last 3 pages. Tools and material requirements are pretty low, instructions are included in the PDF.

A few years ago I modelled and animated a walking Allosaurus skeleton. Originally I hosted the animated 3D model on a real-time 3D website service. Unfortunately I had to close the account when I was tipped off that someone was stealing my work. Not wanting the work to go to waste I resurrected the project as this Youtube video-

Thanks, This is my 3D printed Styracosaurus skull, sculpted a while ago in Blender3D. It's based on the holotype specimen (CMN 344).

Really great models.

Thanks for the kind words guys .

This is a mural I created for my eldest grandson's bedroom wall last year, the layout is a bit cramped, I would have preferred more horizontal space but the young lad likes it anyway so I'm happy. It's designed using Krita digital painting software then transferred to the wall manually and painted in acrylics. Here's both the 'real' and digital versions, I made some minor colour changes along the way.

Thanks again, well he likes dinosaurs as much as me , in fact I let him choose the content and set the direction of the design.

Drew this Ceratosaurus pair (in Krita software on my Surface-pro) as practice for the mural. I tend to use drawing and sketching to learn the form of an animal or object.

Thanks!

Decided to make another skull for 3D print. Mostly based on specimen MWC 1 with parts adapted from other Ceratosaurus fossils. I normally create these orthographic views traditionally with pencil and tracing paper, this time I drew it entirely digitally in Krita on my SurfacePro, traced over digitally assembled reference.

Original research paper here- https://ugspub.nr.utah.gov/publications/misc_pubs/mp-00-2.pdf

Some specimen photos viewable online at WitmerLab-

In the next few weeks I'm hoping to put a new PC together so I can have a go at the Blender 2.8/2.9 series. With my current hardware I'm still mostly bound to v2.79 but that will be fine for making this model.

You are doing some great wok here in 2d and 3d.  Question... is the texture we are seeing on the 3d bones an artifact of the printing or something you added yourself?

Hi,

may I ask about your process in blender?

Do you build a basic mesh (how?) and add detail in sculpt mode?

Are the single bones of the skull different objects or do you sculpt the sutures into one object?

Thanks,

J

Thanks, my personal copies of the skulls are printed in Shapeways' inexpensive SLS material which has a grainy texture.

It's a multi-step process but essentially what you said, a low polygon model which is subdivided for sculpting. Sutures are sculpted in.

This one's been brooding in the background for too long, time to get started on the 3D model.
I'll put a few process pics up but not too many 'cause it slows me down. If anyone's interested in my methods there's a few threads on the Dinotoy Forum.

Used Krita's color-to-alpha filter to make the ortho drawing transparent for placement in Blender as a template.
