Ntodaro39
Hi all, new member here! I was exploring "Dinosaur Ridge" in Colorado near Red Rocks and found this interesting looking piece - any ideas as to what the cut-out bit might be? It's from the Morrison Fossil Area, which I believe produces Cretaceous period fossils. The part in question is about an inch long. Let me know if anybody needs more info/pics to help ID, thanks to all!
Jeffrey P
That looks like an imprint of a piece of fossil wood (twig, stem) which I recall is very common there in the right layers. 2 1
Mark Kmiecik
Strikes me as wood also. 1 Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
Top Trilo
Morrison formation is Jurassic by the way, nice fossil. “If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit) "No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard) "With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane) "We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues) "I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. It felt like home. It still does" -Mike (Pagurus) “The best deal I ever got was getting accepted as a member on The Fossil Forum. Ntodaro39
Wow thanks for the quick replies everyone! Makes sense that it's wood. I was hoping the shape might be a bit toothy but still cool to find something Jurassic-age!

Dinosaur Ridge has both the Jurassic Morrison Formation and the Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone. I recall seeing similar plant remains in the Dakota.
jpc
yes, it looks like a piece of fossilized wood. Not quite petrified. And yes the Dinosaur Ridge area has Jurassic and Cretaceous.
