I believe I found a fossilized egg of some sort and would like help identifying it

Hello, I believe I found a fossilized egg at the American River in Rancho Cordova California.

I was rock hunting and usually pick up any roundish rocks that I see, to determine later if I found something good.

I found this loose on the ground amongst many other rocks. Upon examining it, I dont believe it's a rock at all.

Also dont have a ruler i used what i did have and a quarter, so you can see a general idea of the size.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and have a wonderful weekend.

Welcome to the forum from Alaska! (And ex Sac area resident. Loved hiking the river park trails!)

I'm pretty sure that is not an egg. The texture is wrong and the break lines are inconsistent with egg shell. And the geology of the American River Parkway is not really fossil friendly. Anything there would be well water worn. Plus with how the gold mining tore that place up anything good was beat to death in the dredges. The closest I found any fossils was around Granite Bay. Lots of petrified wood if you can find where someone is doing deep digging.

Thank you very much, I was thinking the pores and the differences between the outer layer and the inner layer just don't resemble a rock to me. It may not be an egg, yet I still don't think its just a rock... however I've been wrong before. Thanks so much for your reply and your time. Have a blessed weekend

It definitely looks different then the vast majority of rocks there. I too would have picked it up wondering. Which part of the river (Sunrise, River Bend, Cordova Park area)?

I don't remember the name either, we just called it El Manto. Loved playing along the river.
