RickNC
Thanks! Going to try one of the scoops instead of my typical shovel.
sixgill pete
Thanks for the link. Those scoops look perfect for GMR, think I am going to get me one! Lee Taylor
I have one with a short handle. Think I am going to spring for a long handle one also. Debra (in the video) has been fossiling a LONG time. I am sure she has tried many things before coming to what she is using. I still think I would bring a shovel along as well. Curretnly I bring a pointed digging shovel along with a flat bladed shovel.
flyersfan805
As long as your not going too deep I.E. swimming.... at least in the winter time anyway. This works great. I use it more than the shovel because it holds so much. While you will still have to have a screen to sort through material, the amount that you get in a scoop is great. It has a sturdy handle and the mouth is super wide to fit anything 4"-5" and below in. Our little creek has a lot of sand mixed into heavy gravel beds and it is great with both. The best part is for ten bucks I can buy a brand new one and get to drink coffee to boot!! bonus! Though I am only on my second one (by choice)and they are starting to stack up in the shed. sixgill pete
Looks like it would work fine in softer sand and gravel, but trying to get into the marl and clay in GMR, I don't think it would work. Taxman56
Have you tried converting a clam rake with smaller mesh. Steel teeth with bit, long handle but a smaller basket
Jyonts12
I know that this is an old topic but when I was at GMR I noticed some gravel in the deeper, faster water but I had no way of collecting the gravel without it washing off my shovel. Has anyone found a way that works best? Has anyone tried the clam rake? Made something? I just would like to get deeper material and go through more material faster. Any new ideas or thoughts? Auspex
There is an implement made that looks like a perforated can, mounted sideways on a long handle; it is used by "kicking" it with your toe into the gravel.
