Oxidised iron deposit or fossil?

Recommended Posts

So I recovered this bit a month or two back during an outing at Samphire Hoe, between Folkestone and Dover UK. When I picked it up I didn't think much of it, assumed some sort of oxidised iron deposit but it was definitely not like any I'd seen and now I'm not so sure anymore, but equally I've no idea what the hell else it might be. Any suggestions welcome and appreciated as always.

Geolocation: Samphire Hoe, Dover, United Kingdom

Site Geological strata: Grey chalk subgroup

Age: Cretaceous/Cenomanian

Site location: Tailings at bottom of cliff face

Looks like a broken & weathered septarian nodule or concretion.

Accomplishing the impossible means only that the boss will add it to your regular duties.

Ah you are right, I'd never seen one in that state before. Thank you for that!

Yeah, but it's worthy of being collected and displayed. It's a nice specimen.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
