Quick Visit to Dave’s Rock Shop

Recommended Posts

Today I got into the city (Chicago) a little earlier than I wanted for a family party, so I drove a couple miles North to Dave’s Down to Earth Rock Shop in Evanston, to see if they had anything that I was interested in and also to see if he had a display of echinoids in the museum.

I did not buy anything today and they did not have a display of echinoids in the museum.

Here are a couple pictures of what they had for sale, without the price tags. This is just a sampling of things. After I post those pics, I will add pics of a couple fossils from the museum. You may have seen some of them from before, but I forget what fossils I take pics of.

The trilobites are always a delight (although many of them are incorrectly labeled in terms of taxonomy and locations -- thus spake the trilo-nerd :D).

Just looking at the pictures I posted of these pieces and they do not do them justice- they are really beautiful.

A lot of amazing stuff in there. Thanks for the tour (again)!

I'm surprised how many people can't spell 'Ordovician', even while pretty much everything else is spelled correctly.

Well on one of the tags Canada was spelled incorrectly.

Huh!  I notice spelling mistakes all the time but 'Ordivician' is so common I had to comment. (I believe the 'Ordoviciam' was a typo... but on a label?)  :s_confused:

These are from Karachay-Cherkessia, Albian (not sure why 175 mya). They are not expensive (at least here)

Thanks for posting the pics, until yesterday, I have never seen them before. I was reading that the belemnites are replaced by flint and that if they are back lit, they are cool looking.

Hi,

Very nice fossils ! Does pyrite represent the organic part of belemnites ?

The 1st pic is marvelous ! And the crystallization form on the 2nd one resembles what is called "sperkise" in the north of France (Cap Blanc Nez) about marcasites.

Thank you! Honestly no idea as I haven't worked with such belemnites, just saw them in fossil shows (pics are from the local forum)

Some years ago, I came across a paper describing pyrite or marcasite nodules at the opening of fossil gastropds preserved in life position. It was an Austrian occurrence, but I don´t know the name of the site, age or language any longer. Maybe someone is able to google it up? I was unsuccessful...

Meanwhile, I have found a brand new paper about an old Austrian fossil site of Triassic age. See literature.

I love Dave's! I recently left Chicago for New Orleans, but this place got lots of my money over the years. My favorite part is of course the basement museum, and the fact that they were playing Pink Floyd every time I went down there! :)

I need to swing by there sometime. I actually was parked in front of them when running up to Evanston to mail my taxes the other day, but I didn't have time to stick my head in. Next time, maybe!

Yeah, well, Daphoenus isn't actually a "dog" and Archaeotherium isn't really a "hog" either but you got to give the kids a reference point.  Gyroptychius is misspelled too.

That Eohippus skull is cool - rare peice (usually only teeth and jaw sections are found).

I actually stick my head in here yesterday and there's some really great stuff. I was really impressed by the Mazon Creek fossils; some of those fish and arthropods are just fantastic!
