Need help with Duck Creek formation ID's

Lone Hunter

Recommended Posts

This week's adventure for Rockwood and I was to the Duck Creek formation in Tarrant county,  we found gobs of gastropods, echinoids, bi valves and peices of ammonite along with unknowns.  Being unfamiliar with this formation I'm having trouble with some ID's, starting with these 2.  I cannot find match for the oyster, maybe the ones I was looking at were worn down so I didn't recognize it I'm not sure.  The impression really has me thrown off,  the piece of shell looks like it might be what made it but I don't know what it is either.  Appreciate any help

Consider Exogyra plexa for the mystery oyster.

Yes I think they are all macrasters except one or two,  they aren't the greatest quality so hard to tell on some.

Thanks Sophie but I don't know them very well, we have to see better pics if possible.

Most are too degraded to  bother, all are like the 3 on bottom row, close up of best one.  Not sure about the other two.

Your finds suggest you might have been in the Goodland Formation.  Are you positive about the geology?

Let’s see some ammonites. Find any corals or bundles of tube worms that are common in the Goodland?

What do you see that suggests Goodland?

Leptosalenias are not common in the Duck Creek formation.  Those in combination with the various gastropod and bivalve (including the Trigonia mold in photo 4,5,6) steinkerns suggests the Goodland formation.

So these were collected from Lake Worth which I originally thought was Goodland, while researching it came across old post from TFF where the OP thought he was in Goodland but was confused because it didn't look right. Then Lance Hall chimed in and said it was Duck Creek so I went with his assessment.

These are the peices of ammonite found there, the small one looks more like a nautiloid though, and one lone part of a horn coral. Have no idea if the last one is gastropod or something else entirely but another clue and then a regular echinoid.

The Oxytropidoceras like ammonites, solitary coral, and Leptosalenia echinoids place most of your hunt in the Goodland.  Nice finds!

The Oxy and the coral was what I was looking for to convince me that this is the Goodland.

Sometimes you need to look at all the fossils to know the formation. Lance Hall’s Northtexasfossils.com is an excellent resource. If I am still stumped, I look at the formations, and their fossils, up section and down section.
