Hey I found this in big brook. Not sure what it’s from or if it’s recent, but definitely bone. Kind of looks like turtle material but I’m not sure. Thanks!

That is a fossil turtle bone all right. The line in the first photo indicates where two of the keratin scutes adjoined.

I washed it and dried it and it’s been sitting on a shelf the past few days and now it is flaking. I haven’t even touched it. Why?

It's 65 million years old. Washing it likely invaded some cracks, and with drying out the bone is cracking.

You need to stabilize the bone with some butvar or paraloid.

Definitely turtle. Probably part of the plastron. It looks to be a terrestrial turtle, which would be more in line with it being modern than Cretaceous, as wood the crumbly preservation.

So would we say modern turtle? Is it worth keeping now?

The fossil bone that I have from the site is quite stable, and it is sort of in Carl's back yard. He would know.

I keep a lot of modern bone as a reference.

Anything is worth keeping if you find value, inspiration, beauty, and/or lessons in it.
