Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for including a ruler, an important detail most new members don't think about (or they use a coin or other object that leaves us guessing as to the actual size).

You'll notice from the images above that trying to photograph black fossils on a white background tends to make the camera underexpose the fossil to compensate for the bright background. The photo with you holding the fossil had less white and you'll notice the details in the fossil are more visible. We also recommend trying to photograph outside when possible as the sun is a much better light source than you can generally manage indoors.

Our members are thinking along the lines of turtle/tortoise shell because the thicker shell narrows to a thin edge and the "wedge" shape in your object is leading us that way.

I'm not really recognizing any of the texture that I usually see on turtle shell. The other possibility would be a fragment of a larger bone.

Cheers.

I think that it is consensus that you have found either a broken piece of turtle shell OR a fragment of a much larger mammal bone. In my hunting I have seen LOTS of both here in South Central Florida. Because of your 2nd, 5th, and 6th photos,  I myself lean towards turtle shell.  The angles seem right...

Thanks to all of you for the nice welcome, excellent posting tips and help with the identification.  With your help, I believe it to be a piece of turtle shell.  Once you all said it was likely a turtle shell piece, I was able to compare with many pics!
