Plant Fossil ID

I don't recall when I found this but would like to put a name to my find many years ago. Any idea as to what plant species this may be?

Definitely a coral, not a plant.  Nice.  Others on the list will be able to give a more precise ID.

The western interior seaway covered parts of SD for a time. So it seems at least possible that it is a fossil.

You're right but I have found some similar pieces from the southeast coast of the country like the image below.
