Jurassic, Callovian, Oxford Clay, Peterborough Member, Yaxley, Cambridgeshire.

 

The closest thing I can think of to what this looks like is a belemnite, but the overall shape is wrong, and the cross-section is very wrong for belemnites I've found at this site and elsewhere. I haven't completely ruled that out though, and opinions would be appreciated.

Thank you both, this is a completely new type of burrow for me from this site, and makes much more sense of the shape.

I was recently enlightened that one can break the burrow and get a clam steinkern from it. Don't experiment with this unless you have a good quantity of course.

Thank you, that's fascinating. At the moment I just have this one, so it will remain intact, but it's nice to know a steinkern might be preserved inside.

 

Quite a few things that had been in my collection unidentified have turned out to be burrows, and I'm starting to find them really interesting.
