Both of these were found on the beach in South Carolina. They may have nothing in common but have similar characteristics to my eye. The first is approximately 2cm while the second is closer to 3cm. Both are symmetrical though the second is not complete. I look forward to hearing just how far off I am!

These look like hyperostotic "tilly" bones, to me.

Yup. That's what I was thinking. Search this forum for "Tilly bone" or the inter-webber-net in general and you'll see a lot of similar ones and learn how (but possibly not why) they form.

Never heard of a “tilly bone”

So it is a fish fossil that can’t really be more specifically identified because of abnormal bone growth. Right?

Correct.  Often times they are vertebra, but they can be other things as well.
