TOM BUCKLEY
This is my final ID question. I promise. Until the next one. I'm thinking an alligator tooth with a very worn crown. TOM BUCKLEY
Tim, you've got me. I guess we'll have to wait for the Florida contingent to chime in. TOM BUCKLEY
Tim, You are absolutely correct. Based upon a reading of a 2016 thread, a posting by digit showed some pictures of tortoise leg osteoderms and they are right on to mine. Sorry but I don't know how to link to the post. Thank you. Tom Go to 2016 post and click on three dots to the upper right. Put cursor on text in box then select “share.” The select “select all” and then “copy.” Go to post that you want to create a link on. Select “paste.” Link should be pasted. You then have to decide if you want a text only link or an embedded link (picture of a link). Look to the bottom of the page. It could be just a piece of large mammal bone that has been broken, and then river worn over a 1/2 million years... If we just go with the shape, it does seem to have a elongated "neck" that normally is not present in tortoise footpads... I think it is a long shot, but similar shapes could have come from tortoise claw cores 1 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
jcbshark
I think tortoise osteoderm is a fair possibility Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

The tortoise claw cores are also generally similar in overall form but they have the concave articulating end which does not seem to be seen on Tom's specimen. The rounded subcutaneous end and the faint indented ring around this base where it demarcates the exposed portion seem to indicate the leg dermal osteoderms more colloquially known as "tortoise leg spurs". The arrows indicated the area that I'm focusing on and seeming to see the indented band. The bone is well worn and river polished so it is not as fresh as it might be in other similar specimens. Cheers. -Ken 3
