Indonesian Tiger Fang

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I've recently acquired this tooth from Indonesia. The seller mentioned it is a tiger tooth but they don't have more information. Does anyone on the forum know about indonesian fauna from the miocene-pliocene? do you think the tooth is real or fake?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Kind regards,

A.P

that's a very strange tooth and with fossils from Indonesia we always need to be extra careful. from some photos it looks like they are two different pieces glued together, but with a closer inspection you can see fractures running through the two pieces. Crown morphology and surface is also very strange. I can't help you much with the identification nor I can say you it's 100 % not fake. you could try too see if there is glue between root and crown. Let's see if someone more expert than me answer to your post.

Thanks for you reply Kiros, I agree with you about being careful with fossils from Indonesia and I'm aware of all the fakes out there in the market (like glueing a crocodile tooth with some bone fragments) that's why I wanted to ask the experts on this forum. As you mentioned, the fractures running through the two pieces might indicate that the fossil is real, or at least very well crafted... I don't see any traces of glue on the tooth either. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will shine some light on this fossil.

Thanks again!

Hi, I do not have more knowledge, but the highlighted part speaks for "well crafted" in m eyes.

Hmmm that's a good point Mahnmut, maybe it was carved and polished but I still have my doubts.

Thanks for your input.
