Fossil or just a rock?

Found this at a spot I was told there was shark teeth. Spotted this, it stood out to me, not sure if it’s a fossil, but it does pass the lick test. I’ve only rinsed it off and given it a scrub with a toothbrush, so it’s pretty rough. Also it’s wet in the pics.

Might be, I found it in the overburden of an iron mine (several mines in my area have dug up loads of fossils, so both are plausible, that’s why I’m asking for help identifying it).  Here’s a picture of it dry

Trace fossils are often preserved in iron rich stone that looks like this. The scratch marks which would confirm the identity are often lost with an outer layer which detaches as it weathers.
