ParkerPaleo
Can anyone tell me the characters to look for in identifying which mammoth species this is? Found in Trego county Kansas ca. 1960.

Brandy Cole
I don't know anything about telling the difference between Columbian mammoths and woolly mammoths, unfortunately. Just based on location, it looks like it would most likely be Columbian, but possibly woolly or a hybrid between the two, according to this entry on https://geokansas.ku.edu/mammoth "Kansas mammoths are more likely Columbian. Woolly mammoths are thought to have stayed generally to the north. Some scientists think, however, that there also have been hybrids between the two. Columbian mammoths weighed about 10 tons, while woolly mammoths weight about 4 to 6 tons. (Cars weigh about 1.5 to 2 tons.)" ParkerPaleo
I had suspected Columbian as well but I wasn't certain of the scientific characters to ensure my guess. Hence the post. More pics: 2
abyssunder
In my feeling, looks very close to columbian.
