It has been a long time since I asked for help Identifying something. This is very intriguing and also very confusing for me to identify. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I found this a week ago in the Ramanessin Brook in NJ.

turtle vert showing attachment to the shell? Or perhaps a vertebral neural arch I'm unfamiliar with.

@Plax thanks! I didn't think turtle vert as an option. Do you think old like Cretaceous Period?

You can use a butane lighter on a thin edge for just a couple of seconds and then smell to see if it's modern. All safety precautions apply of course. When I just googled turtle vertebra I got some pics that looked quite similar.
