Need help identifying this! anenome? coral?

Found on Brighton Beach in England. Salt Water, cold. The whole stone is about 8cm across and main circular shape has about 3cm diameter. It looks like it goes through the stone which is what was confusing me. Thanks :)

Yes, it's a solitary coral.

Sea anemones are soft bodied organisms and almost never preserve as fossils.

It does resemble a coral but I think that the structure shows a sponge wall rather than radiating septa.

I agree with Tarquin. It looks like a sponge, possibly in flint/chert or similar.

From that location, it will be Upper Cretaceous flint. :)
