Ossicle
Jurassic, Callovian, Oxford Clay, Peterborough Member This has enamel, and is the colour I associate with fish remains. Enamel made me think dentition or scale of some kind, but I'm puzzled by the shape. It has a couple of prominent tubercles, which made me think teeth or scale. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Edited May 18, 2022 by Ossicle Edit tags
abyssunder
I'm not sure what it could be, but maybe it's a part of a crab? 1 " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way. Ossicle
Thank you both, I hadn't considered crab, I think I was distracted by the colour. I will try and work out which decapod part this might be.
Carl
I'm thinking this might actually be a bit of coal slag. I'm not seeing a fossil there. 1
Ossicle
I hadn't considered that, it would be shiny, and although I haven't seen any more at the site, I think it's perfectly likely there would have been some there. I've tried to photograph it again in more natural light (me sat by a window) and side on, it's definitely brown, but I think slag can be.
val horn
it does look slag like in natural light particularly on the one side, still it might be interesting to try to clean it a bit to look for to if the crab like pieces will separate out.
