Shrimp Looks Too Good

Recommended Posts

I bought this piece online and it just looks too good to be true, especially for the price.

The description said "minor leg and antenna enhancement."

I agree - the whole thing looks colored over/outlined, to me.

nice piece of art, perhaps partly or full... Can you do a bluelight-photo? This would help

This is under uv lighting, hope it helps. Even under the uv light, the shrimp looks very pink.

mostly colored, I think

I add a pic of a solnhofen-crab how it should look like

the second one has some dark lines, this is where it has been a bit colored. It´s an original, it was colored to show the legs better. But you can see, painted parts do not shine

Your Solnhofen shrimp is enhanced - maybe, probably painted over, restored... You can try using acetone to see how much is real. Maybe 0, but perhaps there's real parts under the paint. As mentioned above, in UV light real Solnhofen fossils glow! For comparison:

Aeger in UV:

And here another:

Yeah, mine doesn't seem to glow. It looks like a shrimp ordered from a restaurant. Thanks for the acetone tip.

If it doesn't glow that means it's either painted over real (split) parts or totaly fake, you can also check with magnification first, then acetone (acetone will remove paint, but no harm to real parts).

For comparison the incredible Aeger from picture above here again in detail. Btw., this was preppared with up to 50x magnification in over 300 hours:

Sorry, might be a painted negative with almost no real parts under the paint.

Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC).

Depends on the paint. Not all paints will be removed by acetone. But glued parts can get loose. So be very careful.

always necessary to buy from a retailer where you can return when its rubbish... Or at a fair, you can see what you get. So many fakes on the market, incredible..

I don't know what's underneath, but looking at it with some magnification, it looks like a colored pencil painting.

No glued parts there, probably just the negative, but yes I agree. Always careful with acetone to reveal restorations; especially if you don't want to destroy the art.

The person who sold me the shrimp will accept a return, but continues to stand by his description of the piece as mildly enhanced.  Apparently there's only a little stain and sealant on it.

I think most of the bright blue in this reversed color image is "enhancement" :

I had to laugh when reading topic title lol sorry.

The Shrimp looks like a complete painting on the rock tho. I would definitely avoid as others have pointed out. Don't think any of it is real actually

Goodluck !
