Hi,  more fossils from my collection. The first two pictures are of a pyritized Ammonite from Buttenheim, Germany and is from the Jurassic. The next two are of a pyritized Ammonite from the Volga River, Russia and is Jurassic. The next picture is of Marston Marble. The second to last and the final is Beringiaphyllum cupanoides from the Fort Union Formation in Montana.

They all seem real to me except for the leaf.

I don't know much about fossil leaves, but that looks painted on to me, but wait for plant boffins to comment.

Supposedly there was modest repair.

Pretty extensive renovation, I would suggest.

The leaf looks similar to others from the same location.  IMAGES

I think it is OK.  Just my 2 cents.

I agree, it isn't particularly unusual preservation for Fort Union plants.

The leaf is one of those fossils you wish you could hold in your hand with a jewelers loup and take a real close looksie at it.  From the pick it looks like it had damage that was repaired with some coloring to me?   Nice ammos by the way.

This area at a minimum looks like a repair.   Shade is a bit different and a UV light might help

Nice leaf and ammo's.

I was wondering if the leaf stem is more indicative of its colour and it has been a little bit darkened but the image link @Fossildude19 posted shows there is plenty of the same colour but I agree with troon there if there is a repair then that is where it looks to be, possibly right past the tip too on that leading edge which I am sure has a far more technical name!

I love the first pyritised ammonite, the detail that was captured is really nice.

That is called the margin, just FYI.  ;)

@Fossildude19 See it did have a better name! Does margin just mean where fossil meets matrix? or is it more technical than that still!

I've always assumed it meant the edge of the leaf.

Thank you for that, very informative. At least I guessed correctly what the tip was called!

I can't get good pictures with the uv light. The whole thing shines though. What should I be looking for?

I created a reversed color image:

I think the outlined parts may have been painted.  Just color added, in my opinion.

Makes a more coherent looking leaf.

It may not fluoresce depending on type of paint used or coating.   I think Tim hit on it.

The first ammonite (Pleuroceras I think) from Germany has had the golden pyrite colour enhanced with a brass brush; whoever did it was a bit careless and coloured the matrix in places too. Still a lovely ammo and if it dulls over time you can bring the shine back by brushing it again

yeah, that´s the way how it will often be done. Most of them are golden because of using a brass brush. But, there are some in nice pyrite, too

I will add some later, we have several in our stuff, brushed and original
