Spinosaurid tooth: real root?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I found this Spinosaurid tooth online. I like the colour of the crown, but I am not sure about the root part. Do you think it is real or is it, or parts of it, added on? Thanks!

The photos are not very good and not even helped by enlarging them.

The tooth has clear repairs in other places, so I wouldn't bother myself.

Yes, I agree, not the best pictures. I'll try to see if I can get some higher resolution ones. But about the repairs: isn't this quite normal for teeth from this formation?

But better ones are also often available.

The root is most likely real and I say that because the colors match and fits the crown.  Looks like the tooth was broken in several peices and reattached.  I don't see anything abnormal.  I like the colors from this deposit and not typical of other KK Group formations.  Also hard to determine how much of that bottom portion is root

Interesting comment.

To which deposit do you refer? I'm a bit confused as to what is typical for 'KK Group formations"

If it's not typical, how do you know it's one of your particular favourites?

Here are the different formations of the KK Group and locations of each.   From Ibrahim et al paper.

Is it true that teeth from the Dekkar formation usually have more repairs than teeth from other Kem Kem formations? And that a Spinosaur tooth from Dekkar without any break repairs would be quite rare?

seems to come from the "new site" near Talsinte.

We have some from there, Spinos, Abelos and others. Perfect ones are rare, most of them have cracks and repairs.

The one you show I think is 90% or more original. You never know what has been added or only broken and glued.

that´s how they look with matrix, coming from the region of Talsinte. Most of them are naturally broken

I think they are a little bit older than the KemKem´s, Berrias, Kzar Metili-Formation

We discussed teeth from "Talsinte" before but has there been anything published that ties that locality to those in the KK Group other than the fauna appears to be the same.   Its not mentioned in Ibrahim et al latest Geology of KKG (2021) paper.  Are we really talking about material from the Anoual area?

yeah, this is how we got it from the digger. We do not exactly know the locality, hope to see it next year. There are some diggers around now so it might be possible to go there. But..., we´ll see

If you're dealing with a digger it should be possibleto get a more specific locality

we hope to go there, not only teeth can be found there, we have seen many other special things from there... We prefer to work with the diggers, when you work with most of the dealers there everything comes from Erfoud
