Petrified Burnt Wood

I've searched the web and these forums before joining so I could post.  Any input would be greatly appreciated. 

 

Appears as though it was once firewood. Shiny spot on "top" of specimen is water.

It does look different that is for sure but I wonder about the burnt idea, if it was then the raised side would be burnt bark or wood then the end on view should be picking up grain in some manner or another I think? I know not all petrified wood has grain but the white band and the damage on the end makes me wonder if it is flint that has had a bit of a rough ride itself?

Any way take me with a pinch of salt and wait for a boffin! 

I like it though, different is good!

Because of the dark grey to nearly black color?

 

There is no essential need for wood to have gone through a fire to be black when petrified. Sometimes, some organic matter of the wood is preserved as dispersed coaly particles within the petrified parts. These coaly particles are often the product of normal coalification during burial, with no burning involved.

 

Would you like to tell us where your specimen comes from?
