[Margate, Kent, UK] My Raw Fossils Collection - Part 1

Omono

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum >> My welcome

This is my "fossils collection", some may be just stones some definitely fossils.

I collected these during a low tide in the rock pools on Margate sands beach (Kent, England). I picked these up with my hands, no hammering or digging.

Over time they presented a white patina on them, maybe calcium? I didn't clean them as it might help to recognize them (maybe a chemical reaction? not an expert so I preferred not to alter them)

This is just part 1 of my collection, I will upload more in days to come. The photos are front and back of the fossils.

I'd like to know more about what they are; teeth, Belemnites and more?

I'll upload here the compressed pictures, for you to identify them, if possible.

I'd like to learn how to clean them but I think it requires lots of experience and expensive materials...

If you need any pic brighter and crispier, just let me know and I can upload it separately, I'm a Photoshop wizard :hammer01:

Hi from North Devon UK!

I think you will be asked to provide some end on photo's of 4 and 11 to help see what is going on inside etc.

1 looks like a shark tooth but could also just be a tooth shaped rock so an end on of that might be an idea too.

You certainly have an eye for spotting unusual shapes so even if all these end up being just rocks then you are already more than halfway there with finding some good stuff as you can spot things!

I think there is a fair amount of very well preserved shark teeth to be found where you are looking so you will find some good specimens there I am sure, I think there is a good few Meg teeth that have been found there too.

Oh and you are fine to wash things that are beach finds in water, normal soapy water is fine as they have been in the sea so you will be going some to damage them more than nature has already! You can use a nail brush too on all these as there really isn't anything delicate about them!

Thanks for the answer! As requested for Number 4 and 11 more detailed pictures.

I've attached also ends of the two tooth shaped rocks if interested.

Hello and welcome to the forum! I am sorry to say but mostly you have suggestive shaped rocks. You do have a shell in the one picture which may be modern. However, the long narrow whitish color object appears to me could be an old broken clay pipe. You can see that there is a hole going through the stem which is currently filled with sediments. That would be a cool find in my opinion.:thumbsu:

Thanks for your answer. What is exactly a clay pipe? A smoking device? And would you know by any chance from what era/how old?

Just google clay pipe and look at the pictures. It is basically a victorian tobacco pipe so about 100 years old, its a start!

Clay pipes have been around, in England since the 16th century from what I have read. But have no way of telling how old this one could be. Especially difficult with no distinguishing features.

Maybe I can open a new thread just on that pipe!

You could start a new thread in the Artifacts & Relics sub-forum. May get more exposure to someone who knows more. But like I said earlier, without any distinguishing features I don't believe there is much more that anyone will be able to tell you.
