I found this on a gravel bank here in Southeast Texas...I didn't want to leave it because I thought it was pretty unusual.  Well, for me anyway....I don't know much about rocks...but in all my years I haven't seen anything like this. It's probably common as can be and easily identifiable to the rock guys...but I thought it was cool as heck on account of the amber colored porous section on top, swirl pattern in the middle and the greenish blue bottom. Different colors, distinct layers. Oh, And I spend a lot of time looking at the rocks trying to find fossils so this did stand out easily to me...so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about it.

And the thought did occur to me that perhaps it was man made...I was just really confused by the rougher amber section while the rest is smooth. It's interesting.

It’s slag from making iron or steel for sure.  I have found a a ton of it at an old site where I iron ore smelting plant used to be in Fort Worth. From looking on online the slag glass if worth some money.  People make jewelry out of it.  Not sure if process technique is usher today.  I have giant heavy ore chunks on flower bed that look to have obsidian on em and some are green glass and other colors on the rock. I can send you some pics of em. They are in my flower beds. My dumb though was a giant meteor when I find found em.  I’m

So i found this other piece that I think is slag too. Held above a light they both look really nice. The amber-looking one looks like fire when lit. I just can't figure out why the two colors separate so cleanly on that one...the amber color from the greenish color. But if anyone has any other thoughts if this might be something other than slag...like maybe a man-made piece like a fragment of a vase or lamp or some household item vs a molten iron product? And why is there such a difference from that amber color highly porous section with the more solid greenish blue section?

Hi,

Probably a difference in mineral density.

Just wanted to add that aquarium shops have buckets of decorative glass and rocks for aquariums, just a few examples shown. Some are natural like the snowflake obsidian and some artistically made like the purple piece  where they added on layer of froth and ice. You could be finding small pieces of that water tumbled.

I didn't even think of those possibilities. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

When making steel they use a blast furnace to reach crazy temps that pushes all the impurities to the top of the mix, that is all the excess minerals etc so whatever was mixed in with the iron ore and potash is what is melted and form the slag lumps. So really it could be anything and the temps involved can cause all kinds of reaction to make things happen!

I grew up near a huge steel works and there is some crazy rocks to be found there.

Looks really nice I give you that!
