on the way home from school

Hey! My name is Johan and I come from Sweden.

a few days ago when my daughter went home from school she found this stone. it was located in a forest area just outside the city of Västerås in Sweden.

I have googled and looked for what it could be but can not find anything that looks the same.

Has anyone here seen anything similar?

I think maybe it's a petrified egg of some kind?

It's a concretion.

No eggshell texture, the 'shell' is too thick and yolks don't fossilize.

I think it's a silica-rich material like silex/flint/chert with nice percussion marks.

But a really cool rock at least!

Absolutely! Looks like a fossilized "Eye of Sauron"!  :)

Hello and welcome to the forum!

a similar piece has been dicussed here, at least concerning the small structures:

http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/122913-what-is-this/&tab=comments#comment-1342849

Concerning the main feature, the eye of Sauron, I think it started as a small vug that was filled by botroidal growth, imagine minerals starting to grow at some spots surrounding a little cavity, each nucleus growing to a half sphere until they get into each others way. I think thats what you see there.

It could, perhaps, also be remnants of some fossil like a sponge, those sometimes form the center of flint nodules, even when they are altered to much to be recognizable.

Best Regards,

J
