Extinct mackerel?

Family Fun

Recommended Posts

I would have found this on the peace river sometime this year, and was in my broader collection of teeth in a jar.  I’ve been giving some fossils to a very cute family that walk by the house nightly, two 5 year old twin girls and their brother who is 7, and their mom and dad.

Yesterday I poured some of teeth into some sand and shells I collected at Venice last year and told them to be sure to also find the very small ones.  They did just that and brought this one by tonight and I couldn’t identify it.  I grabbed this picture before they left, and the young man said if you identify it, will you please tell me what it is?

So here I am hoping I don’t disappoint him, so any help would be appreciated. It’s a tiny tooth, so I don’t have any measurements.  And o only have this one picture.

I don't believe any species of Mackerel shark are found in the Peace River. It sort of looks like Catshark, but I am not sure. So let's call on the Peace River experts. @digit  @Shellseeker @Bone Daddy

Extreme posterior sand tiger I would say. Not a catshark.

I agree.  I have never seen or heard of a Mackerel Shark tooth found in the Peace River.  I have seen very small Sand Tiger (Carcharias taurus) teeth slightly bigger than this find.

@digit is a go to guy for tiny shark teeth.  Let's see what he says...

I actually found a (partial) Mackerel tooth once, but not in South Florida....

I've found these in the micro-matrix from the Montbrook fossil site and they had me wondering for a while. Much different from the larger anterior teeth but the very curved root does carry through to the posterior teeth.

Always a great time when a fossil ends up being the key to a bit of learning. ;)

Cheers.
