Brittle Star fossils from Solnhofen-Real or Carved

Recommended Posts

I got this fossil today. But it looks a little bit suspicious to me.

Especially the color and the light yellow tips of the brittle star.

Can you please have a look for me? Thanks.

it looks all real, they are basically yellow, and there are dendrites of manganese making them "hairy"

Thank you so much :thumbsu:!

Can I please ask, I don't really understand this part (I circled in the photo), these two arms are much longer than the rest and the color is different.

Are these two arms real as well?

This is what appears to be a negative impression of Ophiopetra lithographica from Hienheim in Bavaria. This isn't exactly from the Solnhofen area, being about 70 km. easterly, but the stratigraphy and lithology is basically the same. No worries about the color. It comes from iron-manganese solutions which vary in their strength.

Thank you so much for your reply! It is really helpful as the seller didn’t give me much information on this one. Now I am very happy.

Really appreciate it!
