Try taking photos of your items laying flat on a solid background with good lighting.

  • Fossildude19 changed the title to 3 fl fossils for id please folks. Hawthorn Formation

For comparison: 2nd Photo is a personal find from Hawthorn Fm; The only other large whale tooth from South Florida is Scaldicetus .sp, but I think this shape more likely Kogiopsis.

Best Practices:

Measurements please. Please state the Diameter of the fatter end and the length in millemeters.

You left out the most important photos...

Please photo directly down on the 2 "ends"   ,  Thanks Jack

This definitely looks like a whale tooth. And a very large one it is!

Thx will do that now, silly question but does the chandler bridge formation run along the edge of the east coast and ne corner of florida? Or strictly located in south carolina I believe.

I was thinking of 3 possibilities:

1) It could have been tusk.  But Tusk has Schreger lines,  and I do not see any Schreger lines... so not tusk.

2) it could have been broken roots of a Mammoth tooth, but that has a distinctive pattern of circular enamel around the outer edge.  No circular enamel == not Mammoth tooth root.

3) It is a canine. The oval pattern makes me think upper canine of a felid.

Something like this that I have never identified:

That is my best guess. Someone else needs to take it from here.
