Wondering what this is a fossil of

Wondering what the smaller impression is that looks like a circle with lines all around it.

I am obviously very new to this. Our creek bed and land has fossils on almost any rock you pick up.

The circular bit is an impression of a crinoid columnal.

Very pretty find, where did you come across it? I ask because it will be important for pinning down the age of your fossils. For instance Kane is right about that being a crinoid section, and it certainly looks like you have a couple of brachiopods in there too, but brachiopods and crinoids span a craaaaaaazy period of time. Way easier to tell you closer to exactly what you’ve got it we can check the location you found it against the geological map for that area.

If you’re right about living in a place with that many fossils, I’m very jealous. I’ll look forward to more posts!

Thanks so much....I have more. I could post so many everyday.

We are in Pine City,  NY and the creek we live on is in a valley.

It is called Seely Creek.

Late Devonian it seems like for age, although I could be wrong. If so, I work on a formation around the same age and can say you’ll find a lot marine invertebrate fossils. Might even find trilobite bits if you keep an eye out.

Thanks so much. I did check a geological map and it does put me in the late Devonian timeline.

The second picture from the top still has the shell on it.

Lovely, so many brachiopods. That first piece seems particularly diverse though, I feel like I see a couple different sorts of bryozoans in there, maybe some other stuff if folks with better eyes/more knowledge than me want to weigh in.

In the second and sixth photos of the last serie you have brachiopods, spiriferid for the sixth.

You can find help on this https://www.fossilguy.com/sites/18mile/18_col.htm#brachs.

@fossilguy ?
