Would like help identifying what appears to be fossilized bone. Could not get accurate measurements in photos but joint piece is approx. 1.5 inches wide. Overall size is approx. 6 inches width X 4.5 inches length.

Thickness is about .5 inches and flairs into a flat bottom approx. 1 inch wide.

Piece was discovered by friend along Potomac River between Maryland and West Virginia, USA.

Any help in identifying type of bone or possible species/type of animal would be great. Any information or guesses is appreciated.

Sorry, but I'm afraid you have missed on both. This doesn't look like bone or cartilage to me.

Sorry, I don't see bone texture either from the pics.

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

Thank you for the replies.

Haven't came across anything like this before, only was sure of was that it was stone.

Will try looking other possibilities of what it is as well.

Thanks again

Additional photos showing surface texture might help.  These images appear to show differential weathering of a rock.

Hi Shan,

closer pictures might getting a defiinite ID.

Although it probably is a product of erosion, i have to say it is one of the best "fakers" I have seen here, resembling a scapula very much. Fine structure will tell.

Best Regards,

J
