Possible Mushroom

My wife found what appears to be a fossil and highly resembles a small morel mushroom. I understand that this would be highly unlikely so I am wanting to know what this is and if it has any scientific value.

This is a colonial coral growing on something. A real fossilized mushroom would be flattened because they are so soft.

Name or age of formation coral is from could help give this a name.

Direction of top of coral is up in the cropped and rotated photo below.

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

And the award for best imitation of a morel mushroom by a coral goes to . . .

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Mushroom folks will be happy to tell you that there is also something in their world called a false morel.  This fossil is more false morel than any false morel.

It reminds me of crinoid epibionts/crinoid-coral biocoenosis.
