Hammerstine
I have been hunting fossils in Missouri where several events have occurred such as thermal events, ocean floor, flood, meteor’s, earthquake, etc:. Because of this it’s left rocks and fossils kind of mixed bastardized specimens. This fossil here seams to be in quartz and retained it’s color that I was wondering if there was a chance that the dna inside was still viable ? Hammerstine
Here is a pic of another fossil from the same area that seams to have the same structure as the impression left on the outside of the “preserved plant fossil “
Mark Kmiecik
18 minutes ago, Hammerstine said: It's an interesting piece, but I think it's all geological in origin. Not plant material contained within, but suggestively formed crystals that mimic flora quite nicely. So the answer to your question regarding DNA is "no". Besides, DNA degrades rather quickly with time and is susceptible to heat and reaction with the elements, and either one or both of those would have been degraded it to unrecognizable form in a matter of months let alone the thousands of years required to form this specimen. The second piece does appear to have some organic matter preserved in it, but the photos are a bit blurry so I can't make out what it may be. Perhaps other members may recognize what it is, so let's wait for a few of the others to chime in. Edited July 12, 2022 by Mark Kmiecik added info 1 8 Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
