Petrified wood or bone?

Sable

Recommended Posts

I have a couple fossils that I thought could were petrified wood. I found them around 15-20 years ago near sunset bay on the Southern Oregon Coast. They were both loose on the ground.

My friend thinks that they look more like bone than wood, any thoughts?

Thank you

I am no expert but i would have thought the smaller one was wood.  I think i would take it to a local university or museum and have a paleontologist or geologist look at it directly.

It's not wood. Trust the people on this forum. We have no reason to lie to you. We are here to help. If it was wood we would congratulate you on your find. Fossilized wood is very, very, very common, but your specimens are not wood.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Val is not the original poster, just another person on this forum...

I apologize. I thought I was talking to the original poster.

I understand the confusion. Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish between fossil bone, petrified wood or metamorphic rock. The structure sometimes indeed looks similar. I have my doubts about the one in the middle.
