tinabrand
Found on the beach in village of Niendorf on Lübeck Bay, SW Baltic Sea. The specimen is heavy. Is it an egg fossil, and if so, of what creature in what period? How did the quartz pieces come to be embedded? Thanks to anyone who can help! FranzBernhard
Definitely not an egg. Probably some sort of iron-rich concretion, note the distinct darker outer layer, which is caused by weathering. The quartz clasts are part of the original rock. Btw, I have not seen anything remotely similar before, its a very pretty geological oddity. And there are also chances, that someone may recognize it at a glance . Franz Bernhard 1 1
digit
As Franz mentioned it is a wonderfully interesting geologic oddity. Egg shell is thinner and has a distinctive texture. Not all that is round is an egg--rounded concretions abound in nature. Here's a link to a great post on what fossil eggs actually look like: Cheers. -Ken
Meganeura
While it's not an egg, it's certainly a very interesting rock! 1 1 Fossils? I dig it.
