Simonsaz
Hello, have purchased this stone for a few years. Here is my question: is it just a stone, or a fossil? It was found in wyoming. Looking forward to your expertise. Kind regards
Ludwigia
Looks like a stone to me. Maybe metamorphic shale. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Simonsaz
Oh no, I was afraid of that. When I bought it, it was sold to me as diplodocus bones ok then I had bad luck. Thanks for the reply Edited August 1, 2022 by Simonsaz

Simonsaz
Too bad, then I have paid a lot of money for a stone ^^ thanks for your answers
hadrosauridae
I do think this leans more toward "fossil" than just a rock, but I don't think its what it was sold as. The striations make me think more towards fossilized wood than bone. If it is bone, it would be impossible to identify to any specific animal. It would be an indeterminate bone fragment. 2 "There is no shortage of fossils. Plax
heavily mineralized bone or plant for me. Not definite, just an educated guess.

Troodon
I'm in the bone camp on this one. Impossible to say what it came from.

This looks identical to the bones we were finding. I am firmly in the chunk-a-saur camp.
Simonsaz
Thank you for the great news but I'm relieved. But you see how many here did not agree whether it is a fossil at all.
Ludwigia
I stand corrected. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
digit
With a chunk-o-saurus type find without any distinctive articulating ends to help identify it, identifications from images are difficult. This accounts for the variation in assessments. I have seen a lot of very weathered fossilized bone and agree that I'm seeing bone texture here. So it looks like you did purchase a fossilized bone and not stone but do to its rough shape and lack of precise locality information I'm guessing it will never be identified as more than a chunk-o-saurus. Hopefully, this purchase was not overly expensive. Cheers. -Ken
Simonsaz
I find then already a lot of money for a fossil that you can not clearly identify. Next time I will ask here before I buy something Edited August 2, 2022 by Simonsaz

We cannot give valuations here on the forum but we can give our opinion as to the quality or even authenticity of fossils that are up for sale. Never hurts to check it out before you purchase and add it to your collection. Cheers. -Ken
