I was out a week ago,  hunting the Peace River, not finding much. Basically little shark teeth (Lemons, Tigers, Dusky,  occasional Sand Tiger). I have hunted this location a number of times and the only mammal fossils I have found besides marine Dolphin are chips of Rhino tooth.

I have an open cut on my leg and about to travel for a couple of weeks, so my hunting opportunities are seriously curtailed. Time to look at and identify fossils I found a week ago.

Now this is the Peace River,  and that means mostly float fossils,  So when I initially picked this out of the screen, I thought it to likely be gator... It's about the right size...

When I turned it over , I no longer thought Gator.... quickly switching to un_identified. Pulp cavity and some sort of interesting layering of the enamel....

Not sure why I am adding this,, but found an interesting paper on a Miocene porpoise from Japan,  which has some similarity in item D....

That is interesting Jack. Could we see a side view on a flat surface?

Jim

As you say,  Jim... interesting.  I am dealing with the texture of the enamel as a clue, I checked all of the outer surfaces for whale like horizontal banding without success. It has a vibe of Mastodon/Gomph, but not with any identifiable enamel lines.  One of those we may not be able to identify...I had hopes that someone might be able to ID the texture of the enamel in the 3rd photo above..

Only thing I could think of with some similarities is a piece of mastodon, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I was thinking the same thing - could it be a worn mastodon frag? Part of the root, perhaps? Or a cusp corner, hence the lack of enamel but similar banding?

Fossils? I dig it. :meg:

I am trying to get to the position where I have many comparison fragments.  Mammoth,  Mastodon are relatively easy to identify from the smallest fragments:

I have lots of whale to choose from,, and recently I have picked up a bunch of rhino fragments...

This one goes into the drawer labeled....Unidentified Enamel ... If I keep digging the location, maybe I'll get a few more examples...

Now you have me thinking I need to dig through my collection of what I have labeled mastodon fragments looking for Rhino pieces!
