Meganeura
Here’s another find from today I need an ID on - I’m almost positive it’s an ear bone, and a periotic at that - but I’m not sure if it’s deformed, worn away/broken, or just not cetacean, so once again - any help is appreciated! @Shellseeker @Boesse Fossils? I dig it.
Brandy Cole
It actually looks like a partial tooth in jaw to me.
Al Dente
It looks like a broken cetacean periotic. I think I see part of the cochlear spiral. More angles would help.
Brandy Cole
This part resembled a linguaflexid to me. But I know nothing about marine periotics, so I'll defer to the experts.

Brandy Cole
@Meganeura The new photos make it clear I was mistaken.

Brandy Cole
It's always tough to get photos that convey things that are readily apparent in hand. You do a good job though.
Shellseeker
Looks pathological.... you may have a version of this periotic.. 1 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"

Boesse
This is a delphinoid dolphin periotic, either from a delphinid or a kentriodontid. 1

Boesse
@Meganeura It's missing the spherical/domed part of the periotic, the pars cochlearis - this often fractures away giving you a partial look into the cochlea itself - the spiral organ of hearing, which is a spiral-shaped canal inside the bone. 1

Ahh that makes sense! Thank you, that's a really cool find then from a diagnostic perspective - neat to see how things worked! Fossils? I dig it.
