This slice of wood arrived for me this week. It’s a nice size : 39 cm x 25 cm

Miocene

East Java

@MarcoSr  do you have a similar one in your collection ??

Really nice, very large piece.  I'm not sure if I have a similar type of petrified wood.  I would have to see the cell structure.  You really can't tell by the colors.  I definitely don't have a piece that large.  Some very large pieces of petrified wood come out of Indonesia.  I've seen kitchen tables made from a single piece.  There is a UK seller who sells lots of Indonesian petrified wood at very reasonable prices for the pieces themselves, but the shipping cost to the USA is prohibitive even for small pieces.

@MarcoSr

I will take a close-up over the weekend

I am really pleased with it.

Wasn't too expensive  considering the size.

Here is a close up of the cell structure

IMG_9115.jpeg

Your piece looks like a hardwood with excellent cell structure.  An Indonesian petrified wood expert should be able to ID it.  Most of my Indonesian petrified wood is softwood, or the cell structure has been lost in the mineralization process.  I looked at the cell structure pictures of the hardwood pieces that I do have from Indonesia, and none of the cell structures are a good match to yours.

This arrived for me today

(Too much time in front of the computer on these dark winter days

Callixylon whiteanum

Woodford shale

Middle Devonian

Arbuckle Mountains, Murray City, Oklahoma

It arrived damaged with a small slice on the bottom broken off.
I have repaired it and will do some further cleaning of the excess glue this evening

I have taken it up with the seller. They are quite reputable. So don’t see there being an issue

I had the opportunity to hunt the Arbuckle Hills a few weeks ago. Seeing the Callixylon whiteanum reminded me of a rock I picked up, appearing to be wood. My research of the area ahead of the trip did not talk about or show any woody specimens. So I left it behind. Had I not had a 50 lb luggage limit on my return flight, it would have returned to Minnesota with me. Oh well!

By the way, the fossil is listed as being found in "Murray City". My guess is it should read "Murray County".

That's a shame you couldn't take the rock home with you.

It could have revealed something interesting

My son has gone to university in a city about 200 miles from where we live.
Yesterday I went up by train to spend the day with him.
While walking around, we passed a crystal shop so I went inside to see if they had any fossils.
A few totally overpriced items. But I did buy these two.
Just as a reminder of the visit.

  • 2 weeks later...

Received these small pieces of Stromatolite recently.
It really annoys me that the seller chops them into such small bits. :shakehead:

I have to doubt the info on this one... It looks like a piece of the common Green River (Eocene) stuff like the couple I have:

(wish I could get the color balance right)

I take photos with my phone and the colour balance is often off

Very nice piece.  Your piece definitely looks like an Eocene, Green River Formation stromatolite from Wyoming.  Looks like the stromatolites from Wamsutter Wyoming.  See my Wamsutter, Wyoming stromatolite below.

Stromatolite, Eocene, Green River Formation, Wamsutter, Wyoming (630 grams 9x5.75x.31 inches):

Not all Green River Formation stromatolites look the same with the same colors.  Below is one from Sweetwater Basin, Wyoming.

Hydrothermal Solution, Middle Eocene, Green River Formation, Sweetwater Basin, Wyoming (403 grams 5.25x4.75x.375 inches):

The piece doesn't look like the two I have from the Nash Fork Formation and Nash Fork Shear Zone in Wyoming.

Stromatolite, Hadrophycus immanus, Precambrian Mesoproterozoic 1.4 Billion Yrs., Old Libby Supper Group, Nash Fork Shear Zone, Libby Flats near Medicine Bow, Wyoming (401 grams 4.75x5.375x.5 inches):

Stromatolite, Conophyton, 2.0 Billion Yrs. Old, Nash Fork Shear Zone, Lower Nash Fork Formation, Libby Flats, Medicine Bow Mountains, Wyoming (680 grams 9x5x.375 inches):

This piece looks like the Green River stuff also, IMO.

I take my photos with a real digital camera, with the color balance set to 'incandescent', and it still looks off - even after I do a bit of post-processing. I need a better light source. Anyway they're not too far off to tell what you're looking at, I think.

Really nice colors.  I really like the colors in stromatolites from Hungary, which are one of the most colorful stromatolites (most have fairly muted colors) that I've seen.
