Rock? Skull?

Recommended Posts

Hi there! New member here. My meemaw just shared this item with me that was found near a creek bed behind her house (just north of San Antonio, Texas). Looks like it has some identifiable facial features, but it is awfully heavy.

Thanks in advance for your help in soothing her curiosity!

I am not seeing anything diagnostic to suggest a skull, so it may not be of biogenic origin. That said, Texas has some very strange deposits that might suggest rudist origin. We do have many Texas experts here, but let me tap @JohnJ if he can provide some suggestions.

Good Day and Welcome to the forum.

As Kane said ... Texas has quite a-lot of Limestone, and this is a nice hunk of it. You can sometimes find it being sold for aquariums and terrariums. It can take on all kinds of funny shapes and 'faces' as the water works its slow magic and dissolves the rock. Not a skull for sure.

Cheers,

Brett

Pretty cool looking piece of stone.  Let "Meemaw" know that it is just a suggestively shaped piece of karstic limestone.  As Brett mentioned, the groundwater dissolves many holes in the stone. There are places where a focused search could yield dozens of skull like rocks.  It depends on your perspective.

Keep looking.  There are many interesting fossils where she lives.
