Spinostropheus tooth?

Per Christian

Recommended Posts

Here is a 3.5 cm long tooth from the tiouraren formation, tiouraren hill, Tenere desert, Niger. It was listed as a possible spinostropheus tooth. What do people here think?

I think the preservation makes it difficult to determine if this is a meglosaur or ceratosaur, so its an indeterminate theropod

How many theropods have been identified from the tiouraren formation btw?  I can't find much for pictures of spinostropheus teeth online, mostly afrovenator teeth. So i hardly know what a spinostropheus tooth looks like

Thanks! I'll have to read up on that. I took some better pictures too now, maybe they show more details? I don't think the carinae goes all the way down on the front from what i can see

@Troodon i did a serrations count, and they are just like you described in identifying theropod teeth from the Niger for spinostropheus, medial density is 13 per 5 mm and distal density is 12 per 5 mm

Its possible, but the problem you

have is that those numbers reflect a very low sample size in the paper and there are lots of variations in tooth density in a dentition and individuals, its a range.  You really need to look at all the characteristics to see if its possible to make a call.  I say this because the morph space occupied by Ceratosaurus and Meglosaurids is very similar is its hard to distinguish between these teeth on well preserved teeth.
