Sorry, I will won't participate this year. I had a year full of health trouble which stopped me to go on the field for almost a year.

I am afraid my present fossils are not good enough this year and I don't want to disappoint a fossil friend somewhere in the world.

I invite you to tell me what's your favourite fossil in your collection and why.

Maybe is there an anecdote that links you to your fossil.

For me it's the Megalodon tooth i recently found.

Firstly because, here, in Europe, it's not a very frequent fossil.

Secondly, because that day i wasn't supposed to be on that site. In fact, i was supposed to be on the site of Mios with my club. The outing had been cancelled but i didn't knew it. So i waited and saw no one.

As i had drove for about 180 km, i didn't want to come back home with empty hands, so i went to that other site.

There, i checked the fallen blocks of clay to see if there weren't urchins inside.

Then i took my pickaxe, i gave one kick and the tooth fell on my feet !

That's not a beautiful Meg tooth, but it's mine forever.

With apologies to those who've heard all this before...................

When I was a tiny tot I had, as many young boys do, a fascination with dinosaurs.

So I used to go into my back garden and try to dig some up.

I never found any, or indeed fossils or any kind, but I did find bits of pottery, lots of invertebrates and some plant bulbs. I ate many of the latter two categories.

Yummy.

Concerned for my physical and mental wellbeing, my mother took me off to nearby Kilve beach in North Somerset, SW England. The rocks are Blue Lias, part of the Lower Lias and I found mainly flattened Psiloceras planorbis, huge ammonites in blocks too heavyto carry and some Devil's Toenails; Gryphaea  bivalves.

On my second or third trip there I found my favourite fossil, the coral Lepidophyllia (Heterastraea) tomesi, though I had little idea what it could be at the time.

It was years of research, visits to libraries and museums and consulting folk more knowledgeable than I, that really transported me into the more serious side of fossil collecting.

So, it holds a very special place in my heart:b_love1:

One of my favorite fossils is this pair of oysters, Isognomon maxillata, from Calvert Cliffs. My daughter and I found them, still together in life state, in some talus at the base of a cliff. Also at the bae of the cliff was a lot of glitter. There was an oyster bed running along the cliffside, about 3m up, from which they other oysters were not so much falling out as crumbling out. Usually all people find are the thick hinges. We carefully extracted it with what we had on hand -- some dead bamboo from a nearby stand of the stuff.

I was going to keep the valves together to keep them from breaking. When I cleaned them up, the drying sand just gave way and they separated. This ended up being one of my first meticulous fossil shell prep jobs.

These are huge - a whopping 18cm long. Although you just can't see such things from a photo, they are still pearlescent.

The oyster bed has since been covered with riprap to prevent further erosion of the back yard of a house that is now only about 50 feet from the edge.
