I found this on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, open, in the Mazon River.  I am wondering if it is a fiddlehead, or "birth-of-a-fern"  It came from an area of the creek where the concretions seem to be heavy, and iron laden, so I am concerned that it may eventually disintegrate from "pyrite " disease, so I wanted to share it while it still exists!  Any help will be appreciated.  Thank you!

Are both sides of the item shown?

What is the size of the item?

Hi Val :) From the pictures it looks like a weird iron formation. Still, if you can, you should bring this to the ESCONI open house. I'd be interested to look at it in person.

I will bring it!  I was wondering about that too, once I washed it.

I don't think it's a fiddlehead, but it is definitely interesting!

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

IMG_2710.jpgHere is a pic with the ruler for scale, and a pic of the back of the fossil, which just looks like wood grain, so perhaps it is a knothole?
