Darcy
Hello from West Virginia!! I am new here but I have immensely enjoyed reading all of the information I have found here tonight!! So my kids and I, were bored Sunday evening, so I had a “ Who can find the prettiest rock“ contest. We all thought we found some nice ones and I made the kids dinner and put them to bed. I don’t know why because we have picked up rocks many other times before, but this night I soaked the rocks in CLR. I know that’s probably a horrible thing to do.… But the next morning after the kids were to school I scrub them real good and was amazed! I think there’s so many fossils. My mom thinks I’m crazy! Lol and the more I seem to try to figure this out the more confused I am. Please help! Did we really find dinosaur bone, eggs, and teeth?!! SMH!! I tried to group them together as I thought fit. Hahaha. Edited October 21, 2022 by Darcy Forgot last line

Lone Hunter
Most look like rocks but I see a few fossils like the gastropod in first picture. It's going to be difficult to help ID anything with so many, numbering the pictures will help. 1
Rockwood
Fossils are largely composed of calcium, lime, and rust. These seem fine though. I see two rugose corals and a gastropod. The gastropod is likely preserved as an internal mold.
Coco
Thanks for the information. On the 1st photo I see in order a coral, a gastropod and maybe a coral below, but I can’t say more. Ludwigia
I agree with my predecessors about a gastropod and a couple of corals in the first two photos. The rest looks just like various rocks/pebbles. Sorry, no dinosaur bone, eggs or teeth there. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. ScottBlooded
Hey fellow West Virginian! I agree with the others that you have a lot of (albeit very pick-up-worthy) rocks with a few marine fossils in there. For instance, in your second picture, one of the rocks towards the bottom seems to be a nice piece of lithostrotionella, fossil coral from some 340 million years ago. It also happens to be the state gem! It also looks like you might have some crinoid stem impressions in there and some gastropods but it’s hard to tell with the shots so zoomed out to include so many rocks. Anyway, this would be consistent with collecting in WV but it would be a good idea to include a more specific region in the state as this could get you a more precise diagnosis of your fossils. It could also provide you with other nearby locations to fossil hunt and give you and your kids a better idea of what to be on the lookout for when you do go. This state is wonderfully fossil rich, some truly incredible stuff here. Just no dinos (we’re much older than dinosaurs around here!)
Darcy
Thanks for the info!! I’m from Spencer (Roane Co.). But these rocks were out of my grandmas driveway and we got them from the farm store 20 years ago when we had the driveway graveled. Lol. Know of any good places to REALLY hunt near me? I’m new to all this….lol
