Hi, we found this rock on a local beach where a cliff is being eroded. It had a small fossil pattern exposed on one edge. We’ve broken it open and found a shell of some sort. I would love help to identify it. 
New Zealand, South Island, West Coast

Without better up close photos, it is might be a septarian nodule or concretion.

 

EDIT: looks like shell might be preserved that has irregularly cracked. We need to see close up photos to see if we see echinoid texture and plates.
