This past Wednesday my son and I drove from Cheyenne to Casper to visit the Tate Geological Museum. We got to meet up with @jpc who gave us a great tour of the facility, including a behind the scenes tour. It's been on my bucket list to go since moving to Wyoming, and with the time I have left here drawing to a close I decided it was a great day to go. Without further ado: The Tate.

I love the statue outside of the museum. Half skeletal, half fleshy T-rex. A few other attractions when you first walk in, including the incredible Dee, the mammoth.

JP was kind enough to take us around the museum, telling us about various amazing fossils and their stories. We then got a behind the scenes tour of the prep room, where we got to meet and talk to the other prep peoples. After getting to see their current projects, JP took us to a separate building where they house their T-rex! This guy was huge, even though he didn't have a head!

After seeing the rex and some other wonderful collections we were free to roam around the museum and look closely at the whole collection on display. For a small museum it is really impressive! I'll leave you to rest of my tour now. Warning, lots of photos ahead! Oh, and the story of specimen Dead Sheep 148 was really interesting, it might have been one of my favorites.

Wow... look at all those pictures of stuff I see every day.  Seems weird.

Nice to meet you both the other day, Candace.  Glad you enjoyed your tour.  I'll admit I was a bit rushed...lots going on, but it worked out OK.  And I wish you the best in the next chapter.

Nimravis... I stopped by 17, no 18,  years ago, and haven't left.  : )

  • 2 weeks later...

Nicely assembled displays in a cozy setting... I wish we had such a thing here on V.I. (The V.I. Paleo Museum is the closest thing but it's much smaller, and no room from additions - I have hinted that I would donate some of my fossils but the response was not eager!)
