Found in a field near a rest area outside of Lordsburg NM and the area is still Hidalgo County NM and is still an area that is from the Maastrichtian epoch. Very suggestive shape and was curious as to how something like this forms.

It looks like differential weathering of two different rocks originally "attached" to each other.

It's likely that these were originally adjacent layers of rock which were composed of minerals that had a different level of resistance to abrasion/erosion.
