Ig Kneeuhs
Came across this fossilized bone along a lake shore in central Colorado, a little southeast of the Denver metro area, and was hoping you all could help ID it. My initial thoughts were that it belonged to a prehistoric mammal of some kind but I have very little experience identifying specimens like this.. Also, I'm not sure if this is useful information or not since it was found in the sand by the water's edge, but petrified wood fragments were scattered around the area as well. Any posits will be much appreciated, thank you!
ClearLake
Looks like broken distal end of a cow (or bison maybe) humerus. Some large animal like that.
Mahnmut
Hi Ig and welcome to the forum. have you verified its fossil? Is it heavy like stone? It looks to me, but hard to say from pictures. Its in the size range for big domestic animals, but if fossil, finding out from what time the other finds at your location are could help. Ig Kneeuhs
No, I haven't verified whether or not it's a fossil with anyone. It does seem heavier than I'd expect a bone to be though. That and the look of it had me leaning towards fossil.. But I could be mistaken. Some parts of it seem more brittle than others. Maybe it's partially fossilized? It weighs 156 grams. I'll see what I can find out about the age of the surrounding finds and the specific area itself. Also, when I was cleaning it, a piece broke along a pre-existing crack so I was able to get a look inside. See attached images:
jpc
If you found it on a lakeshore, it could be heavy because it is waterlogged ( not necessarily wet, but waterlogged)
