Burke_Family
Hi -- we have this small fossil. We think it's a fish. But some people who've looked at it see a shell. Now we don't know what we're looking at. Can anyone give us some insight? Thanks Edited November 8, 2022 by Burke_Family

Burke_Family
Thanks -- we are having a difficult time visualizing how a shell would be positioned in this rock. Can one of you with more experience give us some advice on how to "see" it/understand it better?
Mahnmut
Good question. I think its the structure more than the shape that says shell to me. The more spiral part may hint at a gastropod, but there are also bivalves with coiled apices. Because of its thickness I imagine this to be a small section of a bigger shell. Ludwigia
It's not a fish at any rate, but some kind of mollusc. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Mahnmut
I had a look at my shells in order to get an idea what coulf give this arrangement of cross sections. The closest thing I found is to the left in the pic, it explains the spiral part and the "side branch" visible in your last pic The other two are more complete (and much smaller) samples for comparison. I recently learned that the small one is a murex, but would not dare to put a genus on your find. Gastropod seems conclusive to me though. And a real natures work of art!
