Big Brook find

Marco L

Recommended Posts

Hello again, this time I found this fossil encased in rock or sediment in Big Brook. Unfortunately the rock is quite solid and I can't remove it. The fossil seems shell-like.

Would appreciate a lot if someone could figure what it is. Also any ideas on how to remove the rock, would acid etching work?

Is it identifiable of being from crustaceans or from shellfish?

They're not crustaceans nor fish. They're probably from an unidentifiable bivalve.

If you use acid you'll destroy the pieces of shell. I don't think this is worth trying to clean it.

I was thinking it might be, there is a cavity in one of the shell pieces. I think water must have eroded it away, but it does look like the cavity inside the claw.

I feel quite sure this is the claws of Mesostylus (the ghost shrimp) in matrix. I have found many very similar to this.

Agreed. Definitely crustacean material
